I realized something awhile back that made me like the Cosby
Show even more than I already did. As I watched Cliff Huxtable dole out wise
and funny advice to Rudy it made me think about how my dad was, in fact, the
Mexican Cliff Huxtable. Just like Cliff my dad is a born comedian. He always
has something hilarious to say in that thick accent that makes everything sound
10 times funnier. Even if you’re pissed off he’ll make you laugh. When I was
little and I would scrape a knee or bump my head from falling off the counter
trying to get to the cheetos, he’d inspect me and tell me they were gonna have
to amputate my leg or head. “Oh yea Chinita (Spanish nickname meaning curly),
they defeenetly going tu chop et off!” I would cry even louder and then he’d pretend
to cry louder than me. Hmmm thinking back, this sounds more like child abuse. Just
recently he told me I should write a blog post about his metal trash can bbq
grill. He said it would encourage people to recycle. “Those peoples reeden jour
eh-stories, they may like et my greel. They may eh-start tourneen their
eh-tresh cans into greels too!”
One of dad's more daring looks
My dad also shares Cliff Huxtable’s questionable fashion
sense. He may not have a collection of crazy sweaters but he has other fashion
quirks that make him stand out. One of his things is wearing black socks with
white sneakers. This little gem gets me every time. You’d think he’d never
commit such a fashion faux pas with my mom around but nonetheless it happens.
He also used to like wearing velour jumpsuits which was kinda tacky, but kinda
cool in a Tony Soprano kind of way. He also used to like wearing short shorts.
He could sort of get away with those though because he has cute little stubby
legs that look good in shorts.
Most of all, my dad is an eternal optimist and just as dedicated
as Cliff when it comes to making his kids happy. My dad has gone through a lot
of shit, especially in the last couple of years. And in spite of everything he still
does what he can to help us out or put a smile on our face. Whether it’s fixing
our car or lecturing us about how we are wasting our potential, he always has our best interest at heart. I now know that when
I got a facial piercing in college and he told me that it looked like someone was
trying to nail a picture to my chin (I had a labret piercing) he was only
saying it because I really did look like a bozo. I have so many funny and great
memories of my dad. And I will always remember what he taught me all through
life. No matter what life throws you, you got “no choice, steel life.”
My sisters hiding dad's nips; he didn't have time to wax them
I included this clip of Cliff giving Theo a pep talk because
it’s super funny and it’s also classic dad. He has certain panache for these
kinds of things. Bless his little heart…and not just because it has stents in
it.
